Painters Tip
You can direct the viewer through your painting using lines, curves and diagonals. Roads, fences, telephone poles and railroad tracks will be very strong pointers for the eye, keeping the viewer inside the painting, rather like an arrow which says "Go Here". Any linear element will create a path for the viewer to follow. They can also lead the viewer out of the painting but can skip out and curve back in effectively too. Essentially, these roads or other elements create paths, direction, and depth. The curvier the line, the slower the eye will travel. That is not always practical. In situations where the road must be fairly straight, consider using texture and color variation to create interest along the path rather than curves.
